Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 5G: Key features of the ‘big foldable’ phone

Samsung’s 2023 foldable phones are here – Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. While Galaxy Z Flip 5 has clamshell design, Galaxy Z Fold 5 is bigger with book-like design. The bigger Z Fold 5 has lots like its predecessor Galaxy Z Fold 4, but there are also some notable changes including in design, display and performance. The US price remains the same – $1799 – as Z Fold 4, and it’s likely that it will be the same in India too. Here are all the key features of Samsung’s ‘biggest foldable phone’ of the year 2023.

New hinge is here, with zero gap

Samsung has used a new water drop dual rail hinge design called Flex Hinge. This new hinge allows the Z Fold 5 5G to close flat without any gap in between. Also, the opening and closing mechanism felt a lot smoother compared to the previous generation.

It’s thinner and lighter

On paper, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 5G has lost just around 20 grams in weight and 2mm in thickness. But, this seems to have made a lot of difference. The phone feels much more compact and lighter, while using and carrying both.

Display dimensions are unchanged

Samsung hasn’t made any changes to the two displays in Z Fold 5’. The outer display measures 6.2-inch and the foldable one is 7.5-inch in size. Both the panels are SuperAMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate and felt smooth in the brief time we spent with the phone. Samsung has increased the peak brightness levels to 1750 nits compared to 1300-nits in the previous model.

Runs on the flagship chipset for Android phones, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Just like the Galaxy S23 series, the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset. This is expected to offer better performance, improved thermals and battery life on the Z Fold 5.
